Joseph Buzzanca, 33, was arrested around 9 a.m., Monday, Feb. 3, for the June 16, 2019, crash that injured several people, including Trooper Gregory Sawicki, who had stopped to check on a vehicle parked on the shoulder of I-95 in Fairfield, said the Connecticut State Police.
According to state police, Sawicki was on patrol when he saw a vehicle stopped along the shoulder of I-95 northbound in Fairfield and pulled his Ford Taurus patrol vehicle behind the stopped Ford Mustang with his lights and sirens on.
Just minutes after stopping, Buzzanca, who was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe, crashed into the back of the trooper's cruiser, which pushed police vehicle into the Mustang, the arrest report said.
Four people were injured and transported to area hospitals, including Sawicki who suffered three broken ribs, a concussion, injuries to his right shoulder and hip, and a torn left rotator cuff, an investigative report said.
According to the report, investigators found that Buzzanca was driving between 70 and 75 miles per hour and did not hit his brakes before slamming into the patrol vehicle.
Buzzanca was charged with reckless driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs/alcohol, failure to reduce speed, assault with a motor vehicle, and failure to drive in the proper lane.
He is being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
